While I was looking for an example of Dilip Deka's inquisitiveness, I
found this piece written by Tilok Daktor about the recent post of
Umesh Sharma's. Thought newcomers to the net might find the analysis
from a certified goru-daktor interesting.

>Hello Raiz:
>
>
>Sri Rajib Daiti disputed Sri Sondon Kaiti's charges about certain Indians'
>'inferiority' complex. I am finding these things interesting.
>Because things of the mind are my area of work also. I must admit in the
>beginning that I know more about large animal minds. But because man is a
>kind of largish animal, maybe I can be excused for getting into the subject.
>
>Xeigune, pun-prthomei raizor khema magi lolu. Daix dux korile raize jen maaf
>kore.
>
>I live in the dizzying heights of the high ozark mountains. Name of my great
>city is Dog Patch. I am the only large animal shrink ( LAS ) here. Life has
>been good. All the crazies are my patients. THat is good. But what is bad is
>that I don't see many Indians here. They prefer the coastal areas I think.
>Easy to get in and out of. Even though I don't see many Indian hot-shots
>here ( never mind the Patel-motel, does not count), I read India Abroad.
>
>This is what my diagnosis is, as ascertained from the symptoms picked out
>from the tabloid, and as seen in Assam Net:
>
>
>All these 'desis' ( Sri Sondon Kaitis favorite term) that come here from
>all those top colleges and not so top colleges alike, usually getting
>highest marks in Math, Chemistry, Physics, Mechanics, Statics, Anatomuy ,
>Pharmacology etc. etc., and filled with the awe of going to an American
>University where everyone must get record breaking marks,
>suddenly find that they are, well--geniuses. They find that the locals are
>pretty bad in their studies. That the desis are , creme-de-la-creme
>etc. etc.
>
>That is good and bad. Good that they are no longer intimidated by the myths
>of American academic genius as could be measured by college exam. marks.
>THey finally realize that they are truly 'hot-shits' ( pardon my language, I
>am trying to be informal and folksy as only us Ozark Hillbillies can). They
>begin to wonder-- heck we desis are so much better than these local
>beer-guzzling, womanizing, all-night-partying
>lot; who never forget to remind the brownies who the greatest nation on
>earth is and other such superlatives; and we think of ourselves as good for
>nothing? No right they tell each other. They say, we should be able to do
>much better than we do,back in India.
>
>
>THey are right.
>
>
>The bad news is that these hot-shit desis don't realize that they are
>mutants. Yes, mutants! Several of their neurological receptors have been
>turned off since birth by Indian thought police. Of course they don't know
>about it. If they did, they would hack the source code and e-mail corrective
>patches to each one overnight and be whole again.
>They assume that their academic expertises should put them and the country
>that they identify themselves with on top of the heap.
>
>They should not be blamed though. Not their fault. They were raised with
>turned off neuro-receptors, remember? They cannot comprehend that academic
>preparation is just that--preparation. That it is no guarantee of success as
>entrepreuners in industry, business, nation building. Certainly not in a
>nation whose governance and national attitudes are is vastly different from
>that of the USA, even though they *seem* to be alike.
>
>Seem to be alike is a big problem too. How can you tell the difference?
>They have same 'democrasy' wrapper. It is hard. Much harder than, say,
>mukhostho kora or onko kora ( memorizing or math solving), statistics
>spouting or debating. Takes time, interest, and
>most of all, commitments of a different sort: of getting involved.
>
>
>Why me, they ask if challenged? After all they grew up with that mantra,
>didn't they? That is for the guvmint. What are they there for, they would
>retort.
>
>So what happens? Mostly nothing. A few go try 'to do good things for the
>motherland'. Still nothing much happens. They can't figure out why.
>THey have of course no clue that nations are not built thru charitable
>efforts. And that nothing of any substance could be accomplished over the
>internet. They don't realize that entrepreunership is a little different
>from software code writing, or doing medical trnscriptions for American
>doctors or manning call-stations for US Industry.
>
>
>This causes serious problems. Even though mutants, these *are* very bright
>folks, let us not forget that. Pretty soon they begin to see that their
>initial optimism to do better by their 'desh' does not go anywhere. Episodes
>of hopelessness, and Sondon Kaiti is right: despondency, do begin to raise
>their ugly heads.
>
>
>THey then try to analyze why. They have what it takes to do the analyzing.
>But what they see is big trouble. They can't come to grips with what they
>see.
>
>
>Why, you ask?
>
>
>Remeber now, that being the good students, they were also always pampered,
>given the royal treatment over their fellow under-performers and even
>siblings, held up in great esteem. THey were also raised with good moral
>values. Many do serious Pujas at home. At least makes a point of offering a
>prayer with the family at the temple in cities they drive thru on their
>summer holidays, memorial day outing etc. And even the non-god-fearing ones
>come from good families. They cannot get themselves to admit that, back in
>the 'desh', there are some seriously bad problems -- which come in the way
>of effecting progress. Oh, they know what they are. But to say it aloud
>would be sacrilegious. It will be like abusing their mother, Mother India
>that is.
>
>
>So they head towards the warmth of the religion of denial, where others
>before them already have begun to converge. Like 'sogaa to saaki' ( moths to
>the candle).
>
>
>Of course it is suicidal. But this time those turned-off neurons come in
>the way again. They don't see what is coming. Instead of dealing with
>reality, they begin to circulate feel-good articles, laden with impressive
>sounding stats, dating back to thousands of years. Not one, two, three
>thousand either. Seven thousand, ten thousand and the like. They are
>heartwarming though. Even I get teary eyed when I read that Azim
>Premzi is the third richest dude in the world. It is the new growth
>industry, right after
>Valentines Day promotion. Even luminaries like Dr. Kalaam, home grown
>scientists of eminence, are getting into it, without hesitating to
>plagiarize some cute pieces from other internet do-gooders of the recent
>past.
>
>
>But alas! If only they would ask *why*? Why is it that 'desis' behave in
>Singapore and London but not Mumbai or Chennai?
>
>
>
>(To be continued)
