Belligerent UNLF slams Indian policy

Nov. 23. — The banned armed organisation based in Manipur, United National Liberation Front, has cautioned people of the state on the effect of the Central government’s “Look East” policy, that was, it claimed, aimed at breaking the “national liberation struggle” of Manipuris, under the garb of globalisation.

Observing its 41st foundation day, the UNLF acknowledged in a statement issued by its central committee, made available to the press today, that globalisation was inevitable.

But Manipur needs to chart its own “Look East” policy and turn the Centre’s policy to Manipur’s advantage, the UNLF announced.

The outfit, however, reiterated that economic development was not possible till “Indian colonial rule” was overthrown and “an independent political power comes to the hands of the people of Manipur”.

On internal contradictions in the outfit, underlined all the more sharply in recent times in the backdrop of peace talks between the Centre and Naga extremists led by the NSCN(I-M), the UNLF declared that there was all likelihood of “the desperate” NSCN(I-M) landing itself in a “misadventure”.

Such a scenario may also trigger bloodshed between Nagas and Meiteis — if and when the Centre rejects the demand for the integration of all Naga inhabited areas under one administrative unit — the UNLF warned.

In such an eventuality, the UNLF urged the majority, Meiteis and other ethnic groups, to act with restraint and prevent ethnic violence at all costs — just as there was a matured political response by the Meities during the 52-day economic blockade by the All Naga Students’ Association of Manipur (Ansam).

However, Manipuris must be prepared to face all kinds of situations, including that of the breaking up of Manipur to appease the NSCN(I-M), the UNLF further cautioned.

The UNLF also declared that it was ready to work with NSCN(I-M) in the larger interest of the people of Manipur and the region, under the condition that NSCN(I-M) “gives up the path of compromise with India and return to fighting for independence”.

“Freedom and independence can only be achieved through a united struggle against India and never by isolated peace talks,” the UNLF apex committee reminded the NSCN(I-M) leadership.

On its raising day, the Front also highlighted its two-pronged strategy of simultaneously waging armed and democratic struggles.

The Front said its armed wing, the MPA, had successfully carried out several raids against security forces in Chandel, Churachandpur, Tamenglong and Ukhrul districts of Manipur.

On the political front, the UNLF called for a plebiscite under the aegis of the United Nations, to resolve “the age-old conflict between India and Manipur once and for all”.

While cautioning the people against having illusions of a plebiscite in the near future, “because India is unlikeliy to give a positive response”, the Front posed a question to the people of Manipur — “whether the people of Manipur should or should not be involved in the process of resolving the Manipur–India political conflict.”
