ISLAMABAD, December 27 (Online): Prime Minister Shaukat Aziz has said that construction of new water reservoirs is absolutely essential for the country in order to ensure water security, development of agriculture and for power generation.The Prime Minister said this while talking to the Chief Minister Sindh, Dr. Arbab Ghulam Rahim, Minister for Water and Power, Mr. Liaquat Ali Jatoi and Sindh Minister for Irrigation, Mr. Nadir Akmal Leghari who called on him at the Prime Ministers House this evening. The Minister for Interior, Mr. Aftab Ahmad Khan Sherpao also attended the meeting. The Prime Minister said "sitting idle and doing nothing is not an option at this critical juncture of our history as the future of our coming generations is at stake". The on-going process of consultation is aimed at obtaining views and removing apprehensions of the stakeholders in this regard, he added. The Prime Minister said that if construction of new water reservoirs is not undertaken urgently, water shortages will aggravate in the coming years, thereby jeopardizing the future of our coming generations. Given the fact that agriculture is the backbone of our economy, the need for water security and enhancing storage capacity is all time high, he observed. The Prime Minister said that the government would not take any decision that goes against the interest of the country. We would always give the highest consideration to the best interest of the people of Pakistan, he added. All members of the delegation agreed that as enunciated by President Pervez Musharraf, new water reservoirs are vital for the country. End. | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
