Title: Re: [Assam] ATAN BURAGOHAIN SAKO: A Bridge Across Three Ce
Hello Himen-da:

A few points:

*** What is the bridge for?

        >It will take us across three centuries of Time to fill our heart with hope,
        > glory, self-confidence,

        Is that why?

If so, would you, as a public servant, have made such an argument in
your position as a highly trained engineering professional for a similar
project EVEN in Boston--arguably one of the most civic minded and
affluent cities of the world with a long tradition of liberal
political thinking, let alone in Assam, where homeless people have
been living on the sidewalks  of right where you propose this boondoggle
for years on end; where there are not enough public funds available
for investing in life and death issues faced by millions of its most
        vulnerable citizens?

Who will pay for it? Do you expect the people to have to pay for it so
they can go examine what Atan Buragohain might have looked
        like as imagined by you?

*** Do you NOT realize that a structure like that would immediately
block the navigational channel to Kasari Ghat or along the bank
across from Fancy Bazar, for ages to come, requiring  river traffic
to berth beyond Umananda in the dry season, or make a wide detour ?

*** Where in India have you YET seen, a bridge, of any kind, designed
with any sense of creativity or aesthetics, and built accordingly ?
Or for that matter ANY public structure, since independence, on
which you base your expectations of an elegant, imaginatively
        designed and built span?

*** Do you really  believe that once easy access is provided
to Umananda, it would NOT become yet another public bathroom and
a trash heap, considering the condition of the so called PARK
along the river, even after being enclosed with that ugly,
        vision obstructing fence?

I am sorry if I poured cold water on your day-dreams of enshrining YOUR name on the gamosa-tails of Atan Buragohain's. But I would bet a rupee, that the people will consider Mohammed Tughlak's blunders small compared to this little undertaking sprouting from your fertile imagination, as an antidote to the sagging morale of the savaged people of Assam.

Regards,

Chandan

Dear Rajen,

Here is the article. Mukul Mahanta reacted with his tirade "History is Bunk" and Chandan followed up by ridiculing everything I said in this article.  I am speechless by seeing the huge batholith of defeatism, negative attitude, suspicion, lack of self-confidence and mockery. Although I could have written long replies counteracting every point raised by them,  I don't think I should do it: too much churning of negativism will stiffle the spirit. I hope they will see the good points in due course of time. We desperately need a positive spirit, and unity.

I urge the artists and architects and bridge engineers of Assam to imagine a graceful bridge with “poetry in its geometry” as a permanent and constant reminder of what we achieved in the past. "Atan Buragohain Sako” is not for crossing a river. It will take us across three centuries of Time to fill our heart with hope, glory, self-confidence, self-sacrifice and a strong determination.

I urge you and your friends to support the idea.

With love to everybody,
Himendra

Thank you Indrajit!

What do you think of my article ATAN BURAGOHAIN SAKO ? I still need the photograph of Umananda-Urvashi-Karmanasha as seen from the Kacharighat.

By the way, are we not tired of repeating the word "karmanasha" again and again. We have to change the name of "Karmanasha" (Lack of Success) to "Samsiddhishila" (Rock of Success).

That will change the defeatist mentality of people. If we keep on repeating the word "karmanasha" thousand times a year for one thousand years, definitely we get bogged down by a negative, suspicious mind that sees failure at every nook and corner.

"Samsiddhishila" will usher a new age of positive thinking.

 With love to everybody,
Himendra

Suggestion #4

Encourage the merits of competition through hard work; eschew and avoid the 'bandh' culture.

Indrajit Barua.
