I was thinking, what the ONGC would do in such a situation, wha are the options:

a) Pay up the ULFA. They might go bankrupt or have massive lay-offs - but who cares

b) Run from Assam. That way, people lose jobs, GOA/GOI lose revenue,  Assam looses resources, unless the ULFA starts mining oil & gas (assuming the proceeds stay in Assam, and not go to B'desh) - but who cares

c) Shore up its defences. Some officials may get killed - but who cares.

Then we can start the blame game as to why the 'talks' failed.

As normal people will see it, ULFA is trying to blackmail GOI and MMG is falling for it. In the process she is loosing her own creditability.
one would say, she is acting like David Scott who failed because he became too much biased towards the Nagas, and the whole peace Process ultimately failed.
Is it what they are heading for?
And Chandan has already declared that Assam will be the looser.

Bad 'guy', I don't know, but biased, definitely. She would be jumping up and down, and raising hell if the shoes were on the GOI.
Incidently, why is she referred to as the 'negotiator'? Why not call a spade a spade, and come out with it, and call a 'point person' or 'peace representative' for the ULFA.

Not true, we would just as incensed with the GOI if they were violent or demanded huge amounts of cash.

Demanding Rs. 5000 crores may actually bankrupt ONGC or force them to move elsewhere (and still draw upon the resources from Assam). Will that be good for the Assamese that work there or the Rs. 1 Cr. a day they pay to the near banrupt GOA?
Can you or Dr. Goswami justify such ludicrous and self-destructive demands? This ain't good for Assam, the Assamese or for 'peace' talks.

Of course, one would expect a famous legend like Dr. Goswami at least sound 'fair' when talking to the press. But what do I know, I had higher expectations of her.

So MRG too is one of the bad-guys now?

GoI can mouth off peace mantras, frothing in the mouth about how there is no problem that could not be resolved with 'democracy', while hunting down ULFA, without nary a whimper from the now-outraged.

What is surreal here is for the same FAIR and NEUTRAL folks to be outraged when ULFA plays its cards.

Come on Ram. Give us a break! Who are you kidding?

Be that as it may, the demand note to the ONGC will not hamper the peace process since extortion by militants is not unusual."

Highlights are mine.

I can't believe this. "Be that as it may .......". So, is it Kay Sara, Sara,.... Dr. Goswami? or is hope against hope that the ULFA can do what it pleases, but the GOI must hold parleys under any circumstances.
