And I thought that someone mentioned that there is no bias and castesim in Assam.

From the Bihu post:

"It is not just about Trishna’s father, almost every parent wishes that his/her child marries a person of the same caste and religion. When I told my mother about my first boyfriend, who was a “motok”, (and I am ahom), she immediately expressed her disapproval to me. Luckily I broke up with him and later fell in love with a proper “ahom” guy.

Even more serious issue is the preference for the male child and dowry system, which we assamese proudly proclaim that is nonexistent in Assam. Let’s face the reality. Assamese people too prefer the male child, though not as much as in other parts of India. Before the delivery people keep on saying “ Whether it’s a girl or a boy, it doesn’t matter to us.”  But a special wide smile brims when the news comes that it’s a boy, specially in the case of the first born. They say, when the first child is a boy, there’s no need to worry for the next child. Whether it’s a boy or a girl or no child at all, it doesn’t matter. Same is the case of dowry. We keep saying that we don’t have the dowry system. Then , what is the heavy “joutuk” that comes with the bride? These days many people have started to demand certain things to be included in the “joutuk”, and even if there is no demand, the koina’s family stuffs the dora’s house with expensive things so that their daughter is not taunted later! If this is not dowry, then why doesn’t the dora family refuse to take all these things?"
