Just to make it absolutely clear, I have no likes or dislikes about people wearing lungis or dhotis. I don't even care what religion the illegals belong to. What I do care is that "THEY are illegals". Its as simple as that. If B'deshis want to migrate to India, let them do it in the legal way - get a VISA.
Many want to try and make this a religious affair - the Hinduttvas may want to make it a 'lungi menace' while ULFA supporters may want to say that wanting to deport illegals is following some pro-Hindu agenda.
What I don't undersand is why can't people take it for what it is: It is a continuous illegal migration of people from B'desh to Assam and other parts of India. The way I look at it every Indian or (only pro-Assamese) ought to be very concerned about this illegal migration and leave out religious agenda out of it.

I do think the task is daunting. It needs the cooperation of the Center, the States involved and people's committment.
The Center has been extremely slow and often only acts (or doesn't) upon this problem with a political agenda. They are no doubt amply adviced by the State Govt in power whether its beneficial for them to deport/identify illegals or not.
And its not just this present govt. in the Center or the State. What about the AGP? They too didn't do a darn thing.
What about our heroes, the ULFA - they are buddy-buddy with B'desh and ISI, so why would they go against the illegals.
Large sections of Hindu and Muslim populations see this a religious crusade.
Very few in fact think that this is a problem which has serious implications of national security and slow and sure way of getting Assamese totally wiped out just be sheer numbers.
Left to me, I would make it a priority to build a strong electrified border (and who cares what the B'desh thinks).
Make it anti-national/anti-Assamese to support illegals.
Make deporting illegals a priority.
As I said it will still be daunting as the illegals seem to be having so much support from so many of us.

________Government to amend Foreigner's Act in Assam
Feb. 10, 2006
Ahead of the Assam assembly elections, the Congress-led government today dropped the idea of bringing in a new law but decided to amend the Foreigners'' Act to ensure fair hearing to a person before declaring him a foreigner. The decision was taken by the Cabinet Committee on Political Affairs chaired by the Prime Minister in the wake of the situation caused by the Supreme Court's decision in July to strike down the controversial Illegal Migrants Determination by Tribunals Act. After the Supreme Court decision, a Group of Ministers (GoM) was set up to study the Apex court ruling and decide on further action. Instead of bringing IMDT Act in another form, the GoM headed by the Prime Minister decided to utilise provisions under the Foreigners Act and set up tribunals for determination of illegal migrants. Briefing reporters, Defence Minister Pranab Mukherjee said that the CCPA took a decision that before a person is declared a foreigner his case shall be referred to a tribunal and full opportunity will be given to the person being heard. The tribunals would be set up under the Foreigners Act that had given authority to the government for setting up such tribunals, he said. The Prime Minister, during his visit to the poll-bound state last month, had assured minorities that all steps would be taken to protect their legitimate interests in the wake of scrapping of IMDT Act and there would be no harassment of genuine citizens.
