I am participating on this list after a long time. :) Anyway, digressing a bit, I find it interesting that in the US one's ethnic or religious background is mentioned before the nationality whereas it is always the other way round in the UK and continental Europe. For example, one is always an Arab-American or a Pakistani-American or an African-American thereby stressing the fact that Arab, Pakistani or African are all qualifying factors but the dominant one now is AMERICAN!
On the other hand, in Europe you always hear about British-Asian, British-Indian, British-Chinese, French-Algerian etc. Could this be one of the many symptoms of why immigrants are seemingly more integrated into the American society than they are in Europe?
