Happy Holi,

Good portrayal. i did not know that Monday was Holi - it was wonderful weather in DC - just like Holi time in India. Last year in March,  it was great playing Holi in a park and later at the temple in hot Los Angeles -in Boston it was still snowing though. I was in LA to meet my friend after attending a seminar at Stanford in the neighboring town. The Holi was a surprise then also.

I think I missed this year's colors and pranks. Hope I am here to attend the next year's celebrations.

Hope most of use enjoyed the festivities.

I think I was fifteen year old when I visited Barpeta district first time.  I was eager to see the Namghor built there by  Madhava Deva  the most celebrated disciple of Sankara Deva. Fortunately, it was also the period of holi , festival of color , which we also call daul. I was not much fond of holi earlier because in my home town, people used to mix color with chemicals and muddy water and force it on others. However, I realized that it would be different in Barpeta as I approached the entrance to Namghor . I began to feel the festive atmosphere. From a distance, I saw the sky covered with blue cloud cutting across red, pink cloud blowing towards yellow. People were pelting colored powder,
Young girls and boys carrying bamboo poles throwing colored water to each other. The atmosphere became electrifying as  everyone began to throw color shouting “Koliyaa thakur jaya” ( glory to Krishna). Koliyaa thakur is the name of Lord Krishna. People of Barpeta carry the idol of Krishna during the day of holi. Soon , the long procession was agog with bands and musical rhythm of Nagara” and “Bhur-tal” , the sky was filled with chanting of enchanting  holi songs in the background of ocean of  color.

Today is the festival  and I am remembering the beautiful holi.

Wish you all a happy holi,
