NRIs in US from Indian northeast form new body
Saturday, 22 April 2006 New York, April 22 (IANS) A group of Assamese residents in the US has come together to form a forum called Friends of Assam and the Seven Sisters (FASS) to work for the overall development of India's northeastern region.A non-profit non-governmental body, FASS is an international think-tank which will work to provide "an inspirational energy and a motivating force for overall revival and development" of northeast India in all spheres, FASS said.
Apart from Assam, the other states FASS is looking at are Arunachal Pradesh, Manipur, Meghalaya, Nagaland, Sikkim and Tripura.
Stating that one of the main problems of the northeast was the confusion and ignorance about the region, a FASS statement added it would strive to act as a think-tank of enlightenment for the northeast.
In order to achieve its goals, FASS proposes to do the following: study and promote the thought of general welfare and strengthening the democratic values of the people of the northeast; promote research and studies on the social, cultural and economic problems of the Northeast; engage in cultural, educational social action based on the research; promote co-operation with other institutes whose goals and objectives are similar to FASS'; and facilitate linkages between trade groups abroad and the region.
The first project FASS has taken up is the promotion of tourism in the region, the statement added.
