Sulfa couple killed
Dibrugarh, April 22: Unidentified assailants last night gunned down a surrendered Ulfa couple at Gotong village under Doomdooma police station in Tinsukia district. The couple was returning to their native house after attending a Bihu function.
Lolit Moran and Momi Moran were low-rung Ulfa cadres before they surrendered to the army in 2004 and chose to live a normal life at Rupai.
The assailants waylaid the duo, emptied a whole magazine of an AK-47 rifle and fled with the couple’s motorcycle.
Tinsukia superintendent of police Debojit Hazarika said the needle of suspicion pointed towards the proscribed Ulfa. A massive search operation has been launched to nab those involved. Though police are still clueless as to why the duo was killed, a source said the Ulfa may have suspected the couple to be informers of security agencies.
According to the police, a group of Ulfa cadres, led by one Tedho Moran alias Rocket, was active in the area. The outfit was also carrying out largescale extortion in Upper Assam. A few days ago, the son of a Hindi-speaking biscuit factory owner was kidnapped from the outskirts of Tinsukia town. This had forced security forces to renew operations.
