Hi,
Our closing ceremony yesterday for the after school program is something I cannot get over even now. I was amazed at the amount of food and the variety and great feast we had -- all prepared by parents of the scholars (mostly Latino , some black and a couple of East Asians) . Our site manager started crying with emotion - after being thanked my most naughty student (who had climbed over our classroom table and cralwed across it to hand over her test paper - I was busy with another scholar -- and lo her mother and the site manager looked in - to take her home to the dentist - nothing more had to be said - her mom saw it all!!) .
This thanking was my idea - not in the program. The parents and some teachers - initaited by the lead teacher (a black male) later swept the floors to clean the area after the party was over . Then we lifted the tables and benches and hoarded them on one side.
Unthinkable by teachers in India or by parents!!!
Today I went back to give away some books to the naughty girl . Her day care teacher would deliver them. I was given a certificate - with a picture of my class and me sitting at work. We have a staff picinic coming Tuesday. On the following Tuesday - I get to meet the Vice President to discuss my visa situation . She hoped that I would be working with tem next year too - as did many parents and teachers.

PS: What I did not know was that one of the parents of my scholars had been instrumental in gathering other parents to sign the forms and send their kids to this program. Her daughter has the nicest behavior but I am not able to explain to her mother about her academic stuff - since she can hardly speak English. Like most other parents she speaks Spanish mostly. Our site manager is a great help as a translater as
well.
