Dilip-da,
You are right. If new techniques are available which also prevent ecological damage we should go for them.
Regards.

With modern techniques like directional drilling, there is no need to put drilling rigs on the riverbed. Would you like to see drilling rigs in the middle of the river? Think about the possible contamination of river water, not only for a catastrophic leak but just day to day operation? That is what is wrong with it.Dilip Deka

OIL to explore Brahmaputra riverbed
DULIAJAN, May 2 One of the countrys premier oil PSUs, Oil India Limited with its operational headquarter based at Duliajan will start exploration of hydrocarbon on the river bed of the mighty Brahmaputra on the north bank with the onset of winter. Announcing this, the newly appointed chairman-cum-managing director (CMD) of the company, Mulk Raj Pasrija interacting with local mediapersons for the first time on Saturday last, after taking over as CMD of the company on March 14, said: With the discoveries of good reserves of hydro-carbon at Khagorijan, Baghjan and Chandmari oilfields, the company is very much hopeful of discovering enormous reserve of hydrocarbon in the riverbed of the mighty Brahmaputra and the north bank of the river and will start exploration with the onset of the winter, Pasrija said.
According to the new CMD, the companys top priority will be on exploring new fields and that the company will spent 85 per cent of the Rs 1800 crore which the company got from the Oil pool in the North-east particularly in Asom and fund will not be a constraint for the growth of the company by next year. He also informed that the company has formulated some short and long-term achievement targets and the company has achieved the target of producing 3.65 MT (oil) and 2.5 MT (gas) in short term basis in 2006. Pasrija particularly stressed on making aggressive effort to achieve the target of 7 MT (of oil) by the end of this decade and hoped to produce even more provided there was a conducive and congenial atmosphere prevailing in the operational areas.
He also appealed to various organisations for extending cooperation enabling the company to grow which will directly benefit the people of the operational areas, the state and the nation as a whole.
Answering a question at the end of the interaction session in regard to All Assam Students Union (AASU) opposing his appointment as the new CMD of the company which has been advocating for appointment of an indigenious technocrat to the top post and its conspicuous silence later, the new CMD very tactfully answered that he honours the sentiments and hopes good sense prevails, adding that he has been working for the company with dedication for the last two decades after joining the company in 1981, and assured to focus more on the interest and welfare of the people of the state in particular.
