Several questions and comments:
 
Why was Lasha called the "forbidden city"? Because the Dalai Lama forbade foreigners? Why did he do that?
 
It also seems like the Dalai Lama (of early 1900's) was a far different man politically than the present Lama.
Maybe someone could shed more light on this.
