Ram-da,
You made a good point about deciding on one's own and calling it as legal procedure. However, everyone makes his or her own decision -- and we have to see whether British role in India was similar to US role in Iraq .. thats what I was pointing about.

Dear Umesh & Barua,From what I know, the British never really invaded India. The East India Co. formed by a group of shareholders in Britain came to India for Business. They did follow the LAW (British Law, meant to side with the Brit. Crown) by which the Crown took over the East India Co. They did NOT follow any Indian Law (not that one existed) , so that is not really a good point. The following of a law meant to help the crown to take over the affairs of another country (without asking them) can be undertaken by any powerful country - and it would look legal. The argument of following the law would have been good IF and ONLY if had the India also agree to such a law. Did they?Like the US invasion of Iraq. The US followed US Law (passed by Congress) and not Saddam's law. So, in that sense, the British did invade India, albiet hiding behind a British law.--Ram

So were the British ever rulers in India?>No Indian ever threatened British Empire -- before (or after) they invaded IndiaThey never invaded IndiaRB_______________________________________________----- Original Message -----From: umesh sharmaSent: Tuesday, May 16, 2006 10:08 AMSubject: [Assam] ME Times: Can you really compare British in India with USin Iraq/Osama?
No Indian ever threatened British Empire -- before (or after) they invaded India --unlike Saddam Hussein. No Indian ever bombed Britain before (or after ) they invaded India. No Indian was in any way responsible for World War 2 - the way Saddam was allegedly supporting war against Israel (rewarding suicide bombers's families) and US interests in Middle East.Neither did US massacre Iraqi/Afghani civilians the way Britishers did in India (by the thousands - this writer says on 400 in Amritsar though). What do you say?
