I googled for Hemkund, India - the Sikh pilgrimage

It is in the center of the map - slightly brown with white mountains above it.

Below flows Bhagirathi - a tributery of Ganga (Ganges) -from upper left corner to center bottom of the map.

It is a full day walk up the valley once we leave the raod along the Bhagirathi river -to reach the tourism camp. Sikh Gurudwaras and Langars give free food and stay . Then there is a steep 5,000 climb (up the stairs) to the icy lake called HemKund (literaly icy pond) where all Sikhs must take a dip. We just washed our faces before going inside the spiritually uplifting Gurudwara after a
hot tumbler of (free tea).

http://www.tourism-of-india.com/hemkund.html It seems it is 4,500 m - not 4,000 as I remembered.

PS: Room rates were very cheap (then just Rs 25 per bed or 50 cents per night) but food was triple the cost - esp. bread and vegetables. Apples (a rich man's fruit in most of India)  were surprisingly cheap but not that good - a local variety

C-da,

I draw upon my own experiences to draw the conlcusion. Who are your supporters and what are your
affiliations?

I stood for election at my college hostel in Delhi for the post of General Secy in Aug/Sep 1991-- I had the support of atleast about two thirds inmates (60% were Biharis - I was born in Bihar and had relatives there) -as per the calculations of Chandan K. - a batchmate who had urged me to stand up alongwith my roommate (same room) - both happend to be Bihari brahmins. I did alll sorts of campaigning and just about the last day to withdraw nominations - i withdrew my nomination. My rival was a very dear friend who later joined IIM-L but I had thought that his company was not good (mostly yuppies incl. the rich and wildly successful "Bihari-Chinki" of the Geography dept.) and competiton is always good.

Upon advice from another senior -when I mentioned my doubts to him about continuing with my campaigning -he told me that you are becoming the stooge of these supporters of yours . Once
you win -which you surely will - with all this support from within and outside the hostel - they will cheat the hostel mates of their funds - for food etc-we ran our own mess -and blame you. Second. he confided that these upper-caset guys are casteist-and do not want to have a G.Sec who is a Dalit . Since you are a (so-called) Brahmin they want you to stand up and you have popular appeal as well - mixing with people from all over India -incl NE and North India -even communists would vote for you.

I saw sense in his arguments. Next day I withdrew my nomination - and avoided all conversations about the election. Next week I went to my first Himalayan trek upto 4,000 Sikh shrine HemKund Sahib (where Guru Govind Singh had meditated) and Valley of Flowers -below it & Badrinath near the China border. I went with two of my friends -who were not staying in the hostel.  It was a heavenly and extremely rewarding spiritual experience for me.

-----------------

Coming to Arundhati Roy - lets see where she hails from. Kerala -bastion of the Communits of India (so her support for Islamic terrorists -and against Iraq war) . Is she from a rich, traditional Hindu family who gains to maintain status quo  - no she is a religious minority - born in a Christian family in a state where minorities are over 40% of the population and routinely are the political leaders of the state. So , further confirms that she wants to change status quo -and promotes the anti-Indian establishment - "pro-poor" , anti-establishment, anti-development  view -promoted by
both Indian Islamists and Christian misisonaries in India. I meant that she has the suport of Christian Right -who are on the extreme left when it comes to poor developing countries -and supporting their stooges (who may be ignorant of the intentions of their benefactors) by sending billions
of dollars and media attention etc. Why don't her Western supporters (in Australia and US) pressurize Western govts to give a tiny part of their vast lands to those affected by Narbada Dams etc.

So, I say she is a stooge -nothing worse - most likely unaware (like I was during hostel election) about how she is being used as a mouth piece.

No doubt that is a profound observation.

But would you care to explain it Umesh?
