It seems that finally I will get my work permit card again (I had applied in Nov end, 2005). Without that card I could not apply for H-1B visa either. It seems they were waiting for the Immigration Bill to pass in the Senate which it did last evening- I watched while busy on AssamNet.
It go tpassed about 5:30pm --it seems unlike the army -in US Senate noone forces anyone to vote -on time. The voting was supposed to take place at 4pm but so many amendments were pushed in last minute. There were eloquent speeches by both Repulblican and Democrat leaders -esp the Asst Minority Leader (Democrat) who spoke of his mother's experience as an immigrant since 1908.
I think many of my (latino) students of the elementary school in Wheaton , Silver Spring can now become US citizens . Out of the 6 who remained with me till the end - 5 were Latinos (only one born in US ) and a black girl born here (who
mother emigrated from Jamaica -an educated woman married to a semi-literate US born father [of the girl] ) .
I think now those five canbecome US citizens -alongwith their parents. In one case the boy did not remember who his father was (his mother had come from El Salvador with her parental family -and worked as a cleaner/sweeper/janitor -I gave him the school bag gifted to all teachers of the program in the closing ceremony -he didn't even have a bag for atleast a month).
Further, if they pased F-4 student visa then my students from Jaipur School can come here on those visas for tech education - and would find it easier to work here.
