Guwahati, June 9: He has always had designs on people. After his film debut as a stylist, the best of Bollywood could have designs on him. Abhijit Singha is set to become the first fashion designer from Assam to design costumes for a Bollywood venture a yet-to-be-titled Hindi film featuring Salman Khan, Sushmita Sen and Naseeruddin Shah. Yes, I am very excited about my latest assignment. This is a dream come true. But I not only want to make a name for myself but also make the Northeast proud, given that fact that only a handful of people from the region have been able to carve out a niche for themselves in Bollywood, Abhijit told The Telegraph over phone from Mumbai. The cast and crew of the film will start shooting in Mumbai tomorrow. Having bagged his dream assignment, the designer intends to do work that is truly original. Abhijits fabrics of choice are eri and muga, with which he hopes to create modern garments modelled on the traditional designs of the Mising community of Assam. I want to leave an indelible mark on the film industry, he said. Abhijits debut film will be produced and directed by Shehzad Anwar, who previously worked under the tutelage of producer-director Mehul Kumar. Ismail Durbar will compose the music. The designer credited Gravity Media Private Ltd, which is managing his career in Mumbai, with taking him to the threshold of a big break in films. I would not have got the break had the company not believed in me, he said. On whether he had been briefed about what Salman and Sushmita should be wearing in the film, Abhijit said: Sushmita will essay the role of Salmans wife and the latter will be portraying an industrialist. So my job will be to design gorgeous costumes for her. The Assam designer had wowed the audience at a recent fashion show in New Delhi with intricately designed clothes in eri and mulberry silk. I have also designed bridal footwear with heavy embroidery and sequinned designs out of eri. I intend to use similar designs in the film, he said. Abhijit is in the race for the costume designers slot in a couple of other films that are at the conceptual stage. He is also among the few Indian designers-cum-choreographers Gavin Miguel and Marc Robinson are two of them to have been given the opportunity to design for Christian Diors Dior Cherie event in Calcutta, New Delhi, Bangalore and Mumbai in December last year. Some of his other major projects include designing and choreographing shows for the Gladrags Mega Model contest and brands like Godrej, Honda, Samsung and Cygnus Diamonds. |
