Sources close to the PCG said that the ULFA leadership was keen to bring in more people from diverse fields to give their suggestions. The ULFA is going to need the inputs from experts when they start negotiations with Government of India. “The services of experts from various fields like revenue, legal affairs and other areas would be utilised,” he said.

The role of the PCG has not ended. On the contrary more responsibilities may be given to them in the future, he said.

Considered to the close to the ULFA leadership, sources said that the outfit was sincere about coming for talks with the Government of India provided the preconditions like release of the Central committee members were met. Though he declined to give a specific timeframe, he hinted that direct talks might take place sooner than expected.

On the demand for suspension of army operations, sources said that such matters would have to be discussed directly by the ULFA leadership with the Government of India. “At the moment we can only appeal to both the sides to restraint themselves in the larger interest of the peace process”.

First the Government of India should release the jailed leaders then let them attend the central committee meeting so that the final decision on the dialogue process can be adopted, he said.

However, he reiterated that ULFA was positive about the peace process and not using it as a ploy to regroup.
