Ishan Barua dead
Guwahati, July 7: Assam has lost one of its best-loved voices forever. Ishan Barua — the veteran orator-actor with the velvety voice — passed away late last night at a city nursing home. He was 65.
The demise of the orator, actor, filmmaker and writer took his fans, friends and family members by shock, as Barua was in the “pink of his health” and not suffering from any serious health problems.
“Barua was down with viral fever for the last few days. Apart from that, he had no serious health problem. Suddenly his condition deteriorated yesterday and he was declared dead on arrival at the nursing home,” his shocked friend and neighbour M.L. Baruah, said.
Barua is survived by his wife Kiran, a son and a daughter. He will be cremated on Saturday morning at Nabagraha crematorium, his family said.
The versatile artiste is best remembered for his recitation of poetry on radio and on stage.
Baruah also has the distinction of lending his voice to the first ever Assamese poetry album, Saptarishi, produced under the HMV label in 1980.
A retired official of Assam Carbon, Barua acted in several critically acclaimed films and plays, including Purush and Jinti, penned by playwright Arun Sarma.
He took up filmmaking later in his career, directing two documentary films on Assamese scholar Anandaram Borooah and dramatist Atul Hazarika.
“Baruah was a rare talent with a great voice and soulful performances,” close associate and theatre personality Nayan Prasad said. “His death is a great loss for the entire art fraternity of the state. He was not only very talented but was devoted to the cause of improving the Assamese art scenario.”
Recently, Namrata Datta and Mitali Das filmed a short documentary on the multi-faceted man.
