Essays on the Ongoing Crisis in the Cash Crop Economy- Kerala
T. G. Jacob
Wayanad: Misery in an Emerald Bowl- Essays on the Ongoing Crisis in the Cash Crop Economy- Kerala is a critical study on the origin of the current crisis that the region of Wayanad  (Kerala) is presently confronted with. The economic crisis engulfing the cash crop and plantation sector in Kerala has crossed the boundaries of economics and has come to embrace every aspect of life in the concerned areas. It is now manifested in culture too. Wayanad district, being a saturated cash crop growing area, is certainly the worst victim with the largest number of suicides committed by farmers, their families and agricultural workers. These are mainly small farmers, who are trapped in chronic debt and have undergone a steep fall in their standard of living. This is a continuing phenomenon with no let up. The objective of this short study is to unravel the genesis of this crisis, which is killing people. The agrarian crisis has severely affected general trade, which exacerbates the debilitation. People have become sullen, bitter, and feel that they are a betrayed lot.
The issues raised in this book are of vital importance to the victims as they are affected negatively in every conceivable manner. The author’s expose of the crisis in Wayanad leads the author to offer an outlook on the region’s future. He offers an option that could bring Wayanad back from the brink of the present crisis, offering possible ways in how to address the crisis and revive Wayanad towards a more sustainable economy and equitable living standard for its people and society.
