Good to know about your 1960s "Motorcycle Diaries" experience - Che  guevara Style. I read Salim Ali, the celebrated bird watcher did the same in Europe too - his slight built on a huge Trimuph motorbike in 1940-50s.
 
Perhaps you have to experience the new things to ptomote them.

For your information----  organized Campsite/Kampingplatz   were/are the preferred summer/all-year  low-budget  tourbases in Europe. Basics are all there but beware of the occasional brown bear. 
Yours Truly did such  a month in 1960 on a delapidated motor cycle with poor budget.
But I believe the better method will be to trek in groups  in the wild unknown through remote hill communites .Satellite phones should be subsidized/rented by Govt. They won't.

About time. Hopefully it will also allow US style camp sites (under supervison and payment) where people can camp in tents (with roads in some areas to bring in the gear-- as seen in this California camp site photo -surounded by reserved forest-trails -so that people can relate to nature and help in protection (see upper right )  ) http://www.californiacoastline.org/cgi-bin/image.cgi?image=3552&mode=big&lastmode=sequential&flags=0&year=2002
  
 
     
I heard while enroute to Dwarka that on the sly in Gir forest people are already camping by paing off the forest rangers about Rs 300 or so per night.

GUWAHATI, July 9 – Asom Governor Lt Gen (Retd) Ajai Singh has given his assent today on placing a Bill called Majuli Cultural Landscape Regional Bill-2006 by the State Government on the floor of the State Assembly. The Bill has to be passed by the Assembly in connection with the ongoing process for declaring Majuli as a World Heritage Site by the UNESCO.

The Bill is likely to be moved by the Sate Government in the Assembly on the first day of the session beginning tomorrow.  More latest report on www.majuli.info
