But they obviously don't do it all the time. Not only that, the case in the NE was a case where public officials were also involved.

Ram-da,

There is provision for even private univs, recruiters in India to check back with the univs of the prospective/current employees - if their degrees are fake. We did it once for a graduate of Agra Univ who did not seem to have the skillls needed to teach the Physics class despite a MS in Phy from there. U only need to pay the requisite fee -about Rs 100 per enquiry.

So there are avenues of checking and taking (police ??) action --even in India.

Hi Umesh,

Do you know of any Canadian Govt. official or Govt. doctor involved in these fake documents and admitting students into medical colleges? And even if this were true, why should the NE states (or any other state) ape the west in such matters?

If plethora of fake documents is any indicator of a region's effeciency etc then some might draw consolation that in Canada also there is ample supply of fake documents. As an evidence I would point out the notice at UBC's Student Union bldg for buying fast food at a joint which says that it would NOT accept $50 and $100 bills/notes (Canadian dollars) since there is increasing prevalence of counterfeit currency.

Even for jobs many mention fake experience (overseas also) -while seeking jobs -een in North America. It is upto the recruiters to seek and destroy such fakers.

The GOA ought to be applauded for tackling corruption in the state. First, there were reports of school teachers appointed based on fake credentials, then we had admissions into medical colleges based on fake credentials (some of these have even become doctors). The GOA is going back into records and arresting and flushing out these con artists.

And now this multi-crore pension scam. The other areas the GOA could focus on are
The Sales Tax department (one of the most corrupt)
The GMC, the ASEB, and District Transport Office. We all know there is long list, but the GOA ought to be commended for at least taking these bold steps.

GUWAHATI, Sept 2 – In a sensational case, four persons, including the Deputy Superintendent of the Guwahati Medical College Hospital (GMCH), Dr Ranjit Kumar Deka, have been arrested following the busting of a multi-crore financial scam involving the GMCH, the Accountant General (AG) office and the Treasury office. The other three persons arrested in this connection are Sanjib Majumdar, senior accountant, AG office; Srichand Valmiki, sweeper supervisor, GMCH; and Amarjit Singh, also sweeper supervisor, GMCH.

"Ninety-eight fake pension payment orders (PPOs) have been seized and the kingpins of the rackets arrested," police said

It is suspected that the scam, involving crores of government money, started in 1995 and continued till 2005, police said.

Fake pension papers in the names of grade-IV employees, especially sweepers, were initiated by the establishment, and the pension branch of the office of the Superintendent, GMCH. Fake death certificates, photographs and various other documents were prepared and sent to the AG office for approval of pension.

"The modus operandi had been that some staff of the AG office, in connivance with the GMCH staff, approve the pension and prepare the pension payment orders (PPOs), which are sent to the Treasury office. The Treasury office then prepares the pensions, and the money withdrawn is shared among the treasury office, AG office staff, GMCH officials and some sweeper supervisors (havildars), police said.

Further investigation by the police is on. It is likely that the police would be making more arrests in the days to come.
