mm: Regarding legumes, I can give a suggestion. ICRISAT (International Crops Research Institute for the Semi-arid Tropics)at Patancheru, Hyderabad, where I use to work before I came to the US helps farmers by distributing free legume seeds after assesing climate and soil types. They will give good sample seeds and know how. It is a philantrophic institute so there is no cost to our farmer. They have a mandate of Sorghum, pearl millet, groundnut, chickpea, and pigeonpea. They may have dropped pigeonpea by now. I got some samples of groundnut and chickpea to Upper Assam years ago. The groundnut did well but was harvested after the second flush. This was because communication link with the experts were not maintained by the farmer.
ICRISAT only works in the semi-arid tropics of the world. At that time I could not divert research work in the region, because Assam was not in the SAT region. I believe with todays climate pattern in Assam we should be able to solicit attention in the region. Hope somebody will make use of this. Mohan R.
