Manoj-Ram- The General-the President-the pollution Control Board of Assam

55T0ns/year-Wow  a lot!

Because nobody wants to wear Muga-Mekhela any more. Assamese ladies' national dress is now Salwar Kurta

And Old Tin Trunks invite moths.Bride's Xaaz won't last for next 2 generations unless Techno-savvy Strong rooms are made available- as also a leasing plan-like Kimonos are. Today Japan has 3 weavers left-Wahington Post 2/3Dec.

Actually anglers worldwide should be told of the Mechanical Strength and wet-life. Who does?

Revive this supply line. Also maybe super-strength tennis racket frames- racing-car cord? Then Muga might make a comeback. All efforts at indoor breeding failed ( maybe Try again)

Hi Majoj,

>If we start export in a big way, our poor asomiya brides will not have any muga 'mekhela->chador' to wear on the wedding day, export drive may also push up the price beyond >affordability range.

Forgive me, but that seems to be a strange argument. The idea of exports (IMHO) is that such exports vitalize that industry or even bring in fresh capital to other areas in the region.

As for the poor Assamese brides not beinga ble to afford, can also be refuted on the grounds that large scale efforts would improve the overall economic scene (including the poor brides).
That means that these brides would be able to afford the higher price.

But if (as you say) the trees themselves are at risk, then today's 55MT would soon start dwindling in the years to come - unless some fresh capital is injected  into that industry (thru say exports) on agricultural research to come up with better yield for the trees.
I am reaching here - but you catch my drift :)

Actually the production of Muga has plateaued at about 55 MT per year, I think. Rearing of Muga is a very difficult job. My grandfather had "chumoni", where Muga was reared and used to tell me the problems faced by them. It's a tree bred species and we donot have many 'chumonis' coming up.

If we start export in a big way, our poor asomiya brides will not have any muga 'mekhela-chador' to wear on the wedding day, export drive may also push up the price beyond affordability range.

So the drive should study all teh aspects in totality.
