ULFA working under ISI diktat: Bagchi
By A Staff Reporter
GUWAHATI, Jan 13 – Lashing out at the ULFA for targeting innocent civilians,
the All India Congress Committee (AICC) secretary in-charge Assam, Chandan
Bagchi, today said that the outfit left no one in doubt as to whose diktat it
was working under. “Everybody knows who is remote-controlling the ULFA, which
cannot even operate from Asom or Indian soil. What it is doing is never in the
interest of the State or the nation,” Bagchi said at a press conference.

Bagchi said that the recent violence revealed a sinister conspiracy to malign
Asom. “It was apparent that the objective behind the recent carnage was to
malign the image of Asom. However, the whole State as well as the nation was
unanimous in condemning the dastardly killings,” he said.

Showering praise on the people of Asom for putting up a united stand against
the ULFA against the backdrop of the killing of over 60 Hindi-speaking people,
Bagchi said that in Bihar also, the people and the Government were exemplary in
handling the situation and prevented any unwanted repercussion of the Asom
violence.

Bagchi who returned to the city after undertaking a tour of the affected areas
in Tinsukia and Dibrugarh districts, expressed satisfaction with the security
measures taken and the overall ambience following the period of violence. “The
State Government and the administration are handling the situation carefully,’
he said.

Bagchi lambasted Samajwadi Party leader and former Defence Minister George
Fernandes for ignoring the affected families and visiting instead a jailed ULFA
leader and the home of ULFA ‘c-in-c’ Paresh Baruah. “It is incomprehensible
what message he seeks to convey by his visit. He never cared to visit any of
the victims’ families,” he said.

Assam Pradesh Congress Committee (APCC) president Bhubaneswar Kalita reiterated
that the Congress party was always in favour of a negotiated settlement of the
vexed militancy problem. “Militancy is a political problem and we are always
advocating a lasting settlement through dialogue with the insurgents. The need
of the hour now is to create a conducive atmosphere for talks,” he said.

To a question that the ULFA might target Congressmen in the State, Kalita and
Bagchi said that such threats were nothing new. “The history of the Congress is
one of sacrifice for motherland. The list of Congress leaders and workers
killed by terrorists is endless,” they said.
