Dear Alpana baideu, This is very complex and will take many more generations to clear up. Even in Assam, despite our clamour of Assamese sub/nationhood, none really exist. That becomes evident during seeking marriage partners.
Now internet has proven to be a panacea. I saw lot of inter-caste marriages, while the parents were still searching for a true blooded gotra alliance, thanks to orkut/google or icq or yahoo chat. Actually being born into a caste/race is an accident on which the individual had no control. But he/she definitely can control the behaviour/or. Regards Manoj On 1/20/07, Alpana B. Look at us! we don't let our domestic help sit on our sofas (that they dust and clean), give them a separate set of cup & saucer to drink tea, etc., etc. - the list can go on. They don't even get a day off and when they don't show up for work when there is a festival going, we try to cut their "salary" - a salary that is less than what we spend in one meal in a restaurant. Boy oh boy! won't we have a lot to explain when we go up there. Is it racism or casteism or pure insult of the poor by the rich? whatever fancy name you put in, it is just the most primitive way of dominating the weak. ------------------------------ From: *"Manoj Das" <[EMAIL PROTECTED]>* To: *"[EMAIL PROTECTED]" <[EMAIL PROTECTED]>, ASSAMNET < [email protected]>* Subject: *Re: [Assam] :Racism: Have we all been taken for a ride?* Date: *Fri, 19 Jan 2007 21:40:00 +0530* Indian media is agog with the story and today Ms. Shetty taking a u-turn left our anti=racist media persons high and dry. Actually Indian's are the most racist of all. Other day when the new CJI was sworn, the newspaper headlines were yelling "FIRST EVER DALIT CHIEF JUSTICE TAKES OFFICE". Also when they see a little flat nosed and slit eyed person like me, first thing they will ask whether I am a Nepali. All mongolian kids are called Chinky in schools. Our media never see those things. Now they are hurt because, the starlet is being slurred in UK despite her fluency in English. Stage managed or not, this shows the shallowness, prejudice and bias of the media.
