Repair work on Saraighat bridge causing traffic jams
By A City Reporter
GUWAHATI, Jan 28 – Commuters in Guwahati, especially those travelling between
Maligaon and Jalukbari intersection, are facing a harrowing time as traffic
comes to a standstill for hours at a stretch.

Air travellers heading for the Lokapriya Gopinath Bordoloi International
Airport are among the worst sufferers.

Today, the situation was such that people travelling via private and public
transport had to endure close to two hours’ ordeal amidst heavy traffic. Some
air travellers missed their flights as well.

The chaotic traffic snarl was due to repair work being carried out in one of
the motorways on the Saraighat bridge. The bridge is under repair to facilitate
better traffic movement during the ensuing 33rd National Games.

When asked, the city traffic superintendent RK Baruah acknowledged that the
repair work on the Saraighat bridge was responsible for the traffic jam. He
said the work will take another two days to complete. Because of the traffic
congestion, many citybuses changed their preset routes, adding to the agony of
many passengers.
