First award, hope for many more
- Debojit believes 2007 will be even better than last year Idol Chat
The New Year has started on a fabulous note, writes Voice of India Debojit Saha
in this exclusive column for The Telegraph...
The New Year began with a bang for me. It brought me my first major award —
the Kalakar award — which I received at the Science City in Calcutta on January
14. The award is given annually by the Kalakar Award Foundation, which honours
singers in various categories at the national level. I was awarded in the best
album category for my debut project, Debojit.
I am sure my fans are as elated as I am.
It was an overwhelming experience. Walking up to the stage to receive the
honour amidst thundering applause was so exhilarating and so humbling. The
applause is still echoing in my ears.
Although I don’t sing with awards in mind, it’s nice to be appreciated by
music lovers and to be recognised for your work.
Currently, I am busy with my first Assamese album, which I am planning to
release by March.
Since Bihu is in the air and we are all set to celebrate Rongali Bihu in
April, the album will have two Bihusuriya songs.
I am planning to release the album in Guwahati and thereafter I will take it
to different places of the region.
But my first priority will be to promote the album in different parts of the
county, where Bihu is not very popular as yet. I want Bihu songs, which are so
peppy and heartwarming, to be promoted worldwide.
In order to do so, I am planning to take folk singers and dancers from Assam
along with me to every corner of the country during the album’s promotional
tours.
Bihu has the potential of becoming the next “craze” in India — something on
the lines of the bhangra.
Bihu is a flamboyant dance form. Both Bihu song and dance numbers have the
magnetic force to attract even a novice to shed all inhibitions and match
footsteps with the dancers.
I am also looking forward to sing in Assamese films. Talks are on with music
directors, let’s see what emerges.
Moreover, I am busy shooting for Zee TV Bangla’s Sa Re Ga Ma, where I am the
host. Simultaneously, I am singing at various concerts.
And yes, I am practising a lot to improve my singing skills.
