 SILAPATHAR, Feb 13 – A UGC-sponsored national seminar on ‘Autonomy movement in 
North East India: its impacts on socio-economic sphere” was held recently at 
Moridhal college premises at Moridhal in Dhemaji district. The seminar was 
organised by Moridhal College.

Inaugurating the seminar Prof Girin Phukon, Deptt of Political Science, 
Dibrugarh University expressed that autonomy movement was not only led to the 
creation of an atmosphere of mutual distrust among the peace-loving people in 
the North east, but also posed threats to protection of human rights and 
emotional integration of the country.

The seminar was held under the chairmanship of Dr Nani Gopal Mahanta, Deptt of 
Political Science, Gauhati University. The welcome address was delivered by 
Kamal Gogoi, chairman, organising committee, while the objectives of the 
seminar was addressed by Bhupen Gogoi, co-ordinator organising committee. The 
inaugural programme was attended as guest by the chairman of GB of the college 
Dr Puspa Gogoi, principal of Silapathar College Debiram Pegu, retd professor of 
Dhemaji College, Gobin Ch Medok, president of Sanmilit Sahitya Sabha Manch, Dr 
Basanta Kr Doley, S Borah, B Boruah and opthalmologist, Dhemaji Civil Hospital 
Dr J Upadhyaya.

The first business session was held under the presidentship of Prof Girin 
Phukan, Deptt of Political Science, Dibrugarh University. Among those who 
presented papers were Jugal Saikia of Goreswar College on ‘Historical 
background or legacy of various autonomy movements in the North-East’, Dr 
Basanta Kumar Doley of Silapathar College on ‘Autonomy movement in Assam : past 
and present with special reference to plains tribes of the State’, D Letkhojam 
Haokip, junior fellow ICHR on ‘Historical legacy of Kuki movements with special 
reference to Manipur’, Baharul Islam of LTK College Lakhimpur on ‘Language is 
the potent cause for ethnic movement in the north eastern region with special 
reference to Assam,’ Deba Kr Dutta of Moridhal college on ‘Socio economic 
impact of autonomy movement in North East India with special reference to 
Assam’ and Moni Kt Kuli on ‘Origin and root causes of the emergence of 
autonomous council and its impact on the Mising community.’

Attending as a resource person, Dr Nani Gopal Mahanta focused on how to ensure 
the participation of all ethnic community in the governance. He also expressed 
about the root cause of conflict of micro identity, macro identity and state. 
He also delivered lecture on ‘Autonomy movement and identity in North East 
India: Issues and challenges.”

On February 10, Moridhal College also organised a poet conference at the 
Moridhal College premises.
