Dear Shri Hazarika,
Thank you very much for inviting me to participate in Epigenesis Assam 2007.
It was indeed a privilege to be a member of the panel for the session on
"Networking for Growth". The deliberations in the conference were very useful
and I applaud you and your team at the Assam Institute of Management for
undertaking this very meaningful and potent endeavour.
I can understand the sense of skepticism and negativity with which NRIS and
generally most people living outside Assam tend to view the state of affairs
here. Due to paucity of time I could not elaborate on my theme of "Lighting a
candle instead of cursing the darkness". As I consider this very important I am
taking the liberty to share a few thoughts and ideas with you.
Persons like Mr. C Chaliha, Abhijeet Barna and many others who are highly
educated and qualified chose to live and work in Assam. Had they chosen to make
their careers abroad I have no doubt they would have been very successful. I
would particularly like the Non Resident Assamese (NRA) to appreciate that
those who chose to work here made their achievements, small and big, despite
having to work in a disabling environment often against great odds.
The situation is slowly changing for the better. Despite the depressing
developments I am happy to see growing numbers of enterprises and entrepreneurs
who are dedicated and focused on achieving success in their projects/areas of
activity. We need to Network with the NRA'S to convince them that they can
meaningfully contribute in so many ways. A few examples:
NRA Doctors can help to refresh our health care sector with latest medical
advances and with information on and transfer of medical technology. Active
interest by NRA Doctors could help to bridge the gaps in the knowledge base of
our local medical fraternity and upgrade systems and protocols of treatment and
help to make them more patient friendly, transparent and perhaps more ethical.
The suggested areas of participation and involvement of NRAS in healthcare
is only indicative of similar participation that is possible in most other
social and economic areas.
Contd.2
NRAS could play the role of venture capitalists by contributing to the
equity of the promising ventures/projects of young local entrepreneurs. A
couple of such successful projects would do wonders to transform the prevailing
mind sets.
Nothing succeeds like success. We need to showcase our success stories in a
more effective and dramatic way and project more icons to bring about an
attitudinal change to a "can do" mode.
As mentioned by the Hon'ble Minister with modem day media proliferation
levels, NRAS can share there ideas and help to foster a more encouraging and
positive world view.
The list of possibilities can be much longer. However, I do appreciate the
NRA'S sense of frustration and the view that locally, the concerned and
enlightened sections of civil society and especially the State Government needs
to do much more to prepare the ground to encourage NRA support and
participation in a big way. We need to be more responsive to their constructive
criticisms and receptive to their suggestions (e.g. dismal state of Govt.
websites etc.) Most of the things that are required to be done are very basic
and inexpensive. All it needs is the will and the shared vision between NRAS
and ourselves to recognize that even out of the present situation it is very
possible for a new order and resurgent scheme of things to evolve. This is what
I meant by saying that we should look at the glass as being half full. I fully
agree with Mr. Arjun Malhotra that small things can begin to happen right away.
In this regard I had mentioned that F ASS could possibly playa
leading role as catalyst. If we genuinely love our state it is possible to do
a great deal. I offer these opinions as food for thought for future progress to
which you and your Institute are deeply committed.
I congratulate you for this very timely and important initiative. Assam
Institute of Management must continue to lead the way especially because it is
uniquely placed to enable the growth of a healthy and productive society by
encouraging more of its students to seek self employment as entrepreneurs who
are the true producers and contributors of wealth to society. Once again I
thank you for the honour and privilege of being invited to participate in this
International conference.
Yours sincerely
S.Kagti
