No one in Assam can explain the stand taken by Assam Tribune and
Sentinel on the Assam Asom issue.

These two papers were once something to be proud of, but of late, they
have fallen quite alarmingly. Both are now not having any professional
editors and are owner-edited. They also seem to be unconcerned that
their circulation is dwindling.

Recently The Telegraph circulated a CD giving some facts about
circulation of newspapers in NE. It seems AT and sentinel are losing
ground even in Assam. But it is doubtful they are concerned.

Dear Rajen,

Re Assam and Asom issue, I do not know if you have received any new
information. I received the following information:

Quote:

As regards Assam and Asom there are two interesting News items in the Sentinel.

   * The first was on 2 March. Here the Ex CM of AGP Government
Prafulla Mahanta claims that the name was proposed by his Govt and
approved in the State Assembly and sent to the Centre for approval.
   * The second news was on 6 March. It says ' The proposal to change
the name of the state from Assam to Asom was sent to the centre on
December 27, 2006 and its approval is awaited. Asom Government
sources said today, "At present, the name of the State is Assam ," the
sources added'.

No wonder there is confusion all around with the Media, People and
Government not being sure as to the correct name of the State. There
is joke going around-It is Asom here and Assam elsewhere.
Unquote:

From the above - it seems our joint effort was not good enough to
change the mind of the government and listen to arguments of others.
Or is there still a ray of hope??

Regards,

Wahid
