NE Central varsities to get medical faculties
>From Our Spl Correspondent
NEW DELHI, March 12 – In an encouraging development, Ministry of Human
Resources Development (HRD) has proposed to set up medical studies faculties in
all Central Universities of the North Eastern Region during the 11th Plan
period albeit subject to availability of funds. The North Eastern States has
six Central Universities and currently legislation has been enacted for
establishment of three more Central institutes, Minister of State for HRD, D
Purandeswari said in a Rajya Sabha reply.

The University Grants Commission provides funds to Central Universities in NER
besides faculties of management and engineering.

However, the Minister declined to identify any particular reason for the mass
exodus of students out of the NER for studies. It is not clear that they do so
because the required facilities are not available in the North Eastern States.

There are already six Central Universities, North Eastern Regional Institute of
Science and Technology at Itanagar, Indian Institute of Technology at Guwahati,
National Institute of Technology at Silchar and Agartala. A proposal has been
approved to set up Indian Institute of Management at Shillong, the Minister
said.
