Bid to augment mithun population
 GUWAHATI, March 27 – A brain storming session was organized on “Sustainable 
Mithun production for economic uplift of tribal population in North Eastern 
Hill (NEH) region” on March 17 at the National Research Centre on Mithun (NRCM) 
under Indian Council of Agricultural Research (ICAR), Jharnapani in Nagaland.

Mithun (Bos frontalis) is a semi-wild species and is considered to be the pride 
of North Eastern hill States of Arunachal Pradesh, Nagaland, Manipur and 
Mizoram. This animal plays an important role in the social, cultural and 
economic life of the local tribal population. 

However, due to gradual denudation of open grazing area in the forest and 
increasing trend of mithun population, the farmers are facing lots of 
difficulties in rearing this animal with economic viability. There is an urgent 
need for scientific intervention for proper management as well as conservation 
of this animal. 

Considering the importance of this , the brain storming session had been 
organized with an aim to formulate the strategies for augmenting the mithun 
population.

The programme was attended by Minister for Home, Veterinary and Animal 
Husbandry, Nagaland, Thenucho, Prof. K.Kannan, Vice Chancellor of Nagaland 
University and Dr. KM Bujarbaruah, Director of ICAR for NEH Region.

Speaking at the inaugural function, Thenucho said that the scientists’ 
community is the backbone for development and urged that the scientist 
community should be creative enough to explore the potentialities of this 
species for the betterment of mankind. 

Prof. Kannan, felt that the State Government should incorporate biotechnology 
as an important subject in the course curriculum at the school level so that 
more students can attracted towards this emerging area of science.

Dr. Bujarbaruah, spoke about the importance of Mithun in tribal population of 
NEH region. He encouraged the scientists of NRCM to meet the demands of the 
society in terms of Mithun meat, milk and leather products.

The technical session was chaired by Professor Gaj Raj Singh, Dean, College of 
Veterinary Science, Mizoram and nine lectures on different aspects of Mithun 
husbandry were delivered by the resource persons across the country. Earlier, 
the welcome address was delivered by Dr.C Rajkhowa, Director of NRC on Mithun.
