Four killed in Manipur

IMPHAL, April 2 At least four persons lost their lives in different
insurgency-related incidents in Manipur in the last 24 hours.
Unidentified armed men shot one Chingsubam Onil(26), a resident of Thangmeiband
Yumnam Leikai around 9.30 pm on Sunday after being picked up from his
residence. However, the armed men left Onil at Thangmeiband Polem Leikai where
he succumbed to injuries.
Passersby recovered his body, sources said.Protesting the incident, a group of
men and women under a newly floated joint action committee staged a sit-in
demonstration at Thangmeiband area in Imphal West district. They demanded
immediate punishment of the involved persons and payment of ex-gratia to the
next of kin of the victim.
None of the underground group has claimed responsibility for the killing till
the filing of this report.
Meanwhile, Imphal East district police commandos gunned down a youth suspected
to be member of an underground outfit at Bheigyabati Leikai in Manipurs Imphal
East district around 10.45 pm on Sunday.
However, two others escaped under the cover of darkness. The deceased youth has
been identified as one Nongthonbam Inaoba alias Ngongo (28) of Lairenkabi
Maning Leikai.
Family sources said Inaoba left home around ten years ago. Police suspect
Inaoba belonged to Manipur based outfit PLA. Police recovered a pistol with a
couple of live rounds from the possession of the slain youth.
The Sunday night encounter followed soon after the proscribed PLA gave capital
punishment to a member of a gang operating under the name of KRA which has
alleged links with the Manipur police commandos.
Earlier the gang member identified as Laishram Ibungo (34) of Keishamthong
Hodam Leirak was paraded before mediapersons along with a country made 9 mm
pistol with three live rounds which was reportedly recovered from his
possession by the outfit, prior to his execution on Sunday night.
Ibungo was charged with various crimes including extortion under the command of
one Luwang alias Haipou in the name of KRA. He also shared the money with an
Sub-Inspector of Manipur police commando, an spokesperson of the outfit alleged.
The outfit warned other members of the gang to surrender to the PLA without any
delay or face the consequences. Amidst this, a bullet-ridden body of a youth
was recovered and sent to RIMS morgue on Monday.
