Good job Umesh! Very perceptive of you to notice that. On that basis,
one might hope, you will also see what a bunch of garbage the Editorial was.

I have noticed you are reading much better these days . The other day
when you pointed out to Ram how WISHING ULFA away was silly; I thought WOW,
Umesh is thinking , unlike all our brilliant Kharkhowas in this forum :-).

Dilip-da,

That is interesting but not new:

among the Indian populations, populations from the northwest part of India,
including the Kashmiri and Punjabi groups, had the greatest similarity to
the populations from Europe and the Middle East. Populations from eastern
India, including the Assamese and Bengalis, had the greatest similarity to
the populations from East Asia. The only population whose* Fst* values
within India substantially overlapped those of either Europe/Middle East or
East Asia was the Parsi population.* Fst* values for the Parsis were
similar within India and with populations from Europe and the Middle East,
in agreement with their likely origins and their similar membership in the
blue and red clusters in Figure

(52.4% for the blue cluster, 45.3% for the red cluster). In general,*
Fst*between pairs of populations within India did not show a strong correlation
with geographic distance (Figure

The correlation was greater when excluding pairs involving the Parsi
population, but remained considerably smaller than has been seen for other
sets of worldwide populations

My wife Dil took the lead in contacting the Assamese families in Texas to
provide the samples for the Assamese group of the Indian-Americans in the
study. When we met Pragna Patel she spoke eloquently on the subject of
genetic variations. During our conversation, she expected variation among
the Indian genetic samples. However as the study says Indian samples form
one group and there is not much variation in the group.

If you want more information on the subject, please contact Pragna
directly.

P.S. This is purely a scientific study in genes and diseases. Do not mix
it with political discussions that frequent this net, though the Hindustan
Times attempts to do so.

Dear Study Participant,

The study on Genetic variation in Indians that you participated in was
published and it was the subject of an Editorial in Hindustan Times.

Please see the following links for details and email me if you have any
questions or if your information needs to be updated.

The article is seen at:

For those of you who do not know, I have moved to University of Southern
California from Baylor College of Medicine and my new details are below.

Many thanks for your participation. It really made a difference!

We have now launched a research study on the genetics of heart disease and
type 2 diabetes in Asian Indians. If you or anybody you know is interested
in this study, please do visit our website: *www.usc.edu/RICADIA* and send
me your information or you may directly email me.<http://www.usc.edu/RICADIA>
