Voscational Training
Though at present the existing IIT in Guwahati and a few engineering colleges
are considered to be sufficient for Assam, one engineering college at
Ghilamara, if not Silapathar, is necessary to cover the vast backward area of
Dhemaji district. In fact another engineering college is needed, which should
be established in Haflong to serve the entire hill area of Karbi Anglong and NC
Hills. Haflong is considered to be a place having a climate of the most
congenial type for academic institutes.
However, we cannot expect any service from most of the output of these
institutes, since most of them will go out of the State or even the country in
search of better prospects. The remaining ones will go for government or
company jobs.
But in reality we need technicians and craftsmen, vocationally trained from the
semi-educated group of energetic youths.
For instance, in civil engineering, we need surveyors who can handle dumpy
level, quick-setting levels, plain-table and chain survey, clinometer etc.
We also need draftmen who can anchor perspectives and views and make
structural drawings. Interior decorators, painters, carpenters, tailors,
weavers, embroidery-makers and the like are all whom we are in need of.
In electrical activities, we need efficient work force for house wiring, motor
and pump repairing, and a whole lot of other activities.
In mechanical activities, we need drivers of not only four-wheelers but also
roadrollers, graders, bulldozers, generators, and other varieties of
sophisticated equipment.
Assam is in dire need of centres for vocational training. The State Government
should think of establishing a good number of such institutes if necessary by
bringing skilled trainers from other parts of the country on contract. Once our
youths are trained, unemployment problem will automatically come to an end. The
government should be pragmatic enough to realize this.
