Subject: Re: rites of passage
India is an extraordinarily diverse country with some 17 major languages,
more than 4000 religioius sects, and thousands of tribal goups and communities
with their own customs, some of them matrilineal or matriarchal. About the only
generality I can think of is that in urban areas where Islam, mainstream
Hinduism and Christianiity are well established, girls and their families
typically follow the universal customs of their faith. But in urban areas you
can also find prominent matrilineal or matriarchal communities like the Nairs
of South India, and minority religious communities like the Parsis
(Zoroastrians) of Bombay. There is a great deal of anthropological literature
on the customs of the various communities in India, and quite a bit of it is
now online. I suggest you try a Google search on something like "girls India
'coming of age'."
Good luck!

am writing an article on rites of passage. I just wanted to know about the rite
of passage for girl in the Indian community. I just need to know how it is
perform and what is it meaning? I would love any feedback I could get?
