Rs. 305 crore approved for critical flood control and Anti-erosion  Schemes in 
Ganga Basin(Dr. D.k.Mishra pl. note)The following are the excerpts from the 
"Report to the People 2004-2007" on Ministry of Water Resources. The report was 
released by   [STATE OF THE UNION??]the Prime Minister Dr. Manmohan Singh on 
22nd May, 2007.Water Conservation: A substantial proportion of funds under 
theschemes mandated by the National Rural Employment Guarantee Act isearmarked 
for Water Conservation works. A National Project for Repair,Renovation and 
Restoration of Water Bodies used by farmers has beenlaunched on pilot basis. 
The DPAP and IWDP, the two programmes forwatershed development, have been 
brought under a common guideline.States have been asked to direct municipal 
bodies to makerainwater-harvesting part of design approvals by local bodies. 
Anumber of states have done work on rainwater harvesting and takensteps to 
amend municipal or building laws.Initiatives in dry-land farming: National 
Rain-fed Area Authority isbeing established to look into all dimensions of 
managing water resources in rain-fed areas.[Delhi knows how to!!!]Interlinking 
of rivers: Agreement for the first inter-linking ofrivers project for Ken and 
Betwa rivers has been signed between MadhyaPradesh and Uttar Pradesh and 
completion of the detailed projectreport is targeted by mid 2008. On the 
Parvati-Kalisindh-Chambal link,consensus has been arrived at between Madhya 
Pradesh and Rajasthan andboth the states are working out the details of draft 
MoU.Flood Management: In the purview of states. Nevertheless, the Centreis 
assisting them. The recommendations of a Task Force on short and long term 
measures for addressing problems associated within floods have been circulated 
to state (3 years after 2004 Assam Disaster floods and Manmohan's threatened 
TASKFORCE later)governments concerned.
 The jurisdictionof Farakka Barrage has been extended for speedy implementation 
ofanti-erosion works and other measures are at various stages ofapproval and 
implementation.. Critical flood control and anti-erosion( Where is the Head  
and where the Tail?)schemes in the Ganga basin states have been approved with a 
total costof Rs. 305 crore. The Government has approved schemes amounting to 
Rs.225 crore for taking up critical flood control and anti-erosionprojects in 
the Brahmaputra and Barak valleys during 2006-07. 
 
A StateSector scheme of the Ministry of Water Resources amounting to Rs.166.68 
crore benefiting all northeastern states as well as West Bengal has also been
