Subject: Re: rites of passage - Indian women

 Dear Val,

Actually, there is a rite of passage for Hindu women in Andhra Pradesh. My
husband is Telugu, so I can ask him about it. The ceremony is done when the
girl gets her first period. It is extant and still practiced in even
metropolitan communities. In fact, we were watching a Telugu movie recently
which featured this festival.

I also believe that there is a ceremony that Punjabis do for girls because I
remember being told about it by an aunt. I can ask my father.

If your timeline permits, is it okay if I get back to you in the next couple of
days?

as far as I know there are no rites of passage for Hindu women (each region and
religion has its own traditions in India) in India or that for women of Jain
and Sikh faith - when they approach womanhood. However, in most rural Hindu
communities in India a girl is expected to be married by the time she reaches
puberty.
