Nine NE girls taken out of brothels
By Our Staff Reporter
GUWAHATI, July 5: Altogether 9 girls from the North-east who were rescued from
several Mumbai brothels, have at last reached Guwahati this morning.
The girls were rescued by the Rescue Foundation, a Maharashtra-based NGO
working with an objective to prevent the menace of illegal human trafficking,
about three months ago. All the girls have been handed over to the Global
Organization for Life Development (GOLD), a city-based NGO.
Two of the rescued girls hail from Asom — one is a resident of the city’s
Gandhibasti area and other is from Nagaon — sources said. Among the rest, six
are from Shillong and one is from Dimapur, added the sources. All of them are
now in Nabajivan, a city-based shelter home set up by the GOLD.
It has been alleged that many innocent girls from the north-eastern States are
being taken to various cities with false assurance of giving employment, and
finally the girls find themselves in the red-light areas.
