AASU lashes out at Gogoi for weak stand

GUWAHATI, Aug 2 Reiterating its demand for handing over suspected
Bangladeshi nationals expelled by neighbouring States to police custody, the
All Assam Students Union (AASU) today said that the weak stand of the Chief
Minister on the issue could jeopardize the future of the indigenous people of
the State. The Chief Minister, who has shown an undue haste in giving a clean
chit to the suspected Bangladeshis, has exposed his lack of guts to take action
against the infiltrators. The assertion of their identity is best left to the
law and certainly not to the political prejudice of the Chief Minister, AASU
president Sankar Prasad Ray and general secretary Tapan Gogoi said.
The AASU leaders said that the Chief Minister was unwilling to resort to the
option of keeping the suspected Bangladeshis in temporary prisons and to
ascertain their identity as per law for the fear of losing his vote bank.
Even the Union Home Ministry was open to the idea of keeping the suspected
infiltrators in temporary jails. This is a great fall on the part of the Chief
Minister, who has taken a retrograde step on a matter concerning the very
existence of the indigenous people, they added.
The AASU said that the recent developments confirmed that the political
influence of Bangladeshis who had been a traditional vote bank of the Congress
was on the rise. The people of Assam have not yet forgotten the volte face
made by former Chief Minister, the late Hiteswar Sakia, who, after proclaiming
the existence of 30 lakh Bangladeshis in the State, denied it within 24 hours.
It is evident that the dependence of the Congress on Bangladeshi votes is as
great as ever, it said.
The AASU urged the Chief Minister to start a drive in the form of appeals in
various forms of media asking the post-March 25, 1971 Bangladeshis to leave
Assam on their own. If the Chief Minister can show this much courage, a
beginning can be made in the detection and deportation process of illegal
Bangladeshis. Otherwise, as situation may come when the indigenous people will
take upon themselves the matter of expelling infiltrators, and the Government
will be responsible for such a situation, it added.
