GU ties up with biz houses for courses
A STAFF REPORTER Aug. 8: Gauhati University has started a
process of collaboration with corporate houses and various other leading
organisations to introduce self-financing and job-oriented courses.
Vice-chancellor Amarjyoti Choudhury said the commerce department of Gauhati
University has introduced one-year diploma course in insurance and banking
finance in collaboration with ICICI Bank.
He said the course has been designed in a way to meet challenges in the
insurance and banking sectors.
The course will not only garner revenue for cash-starved Gauhati University
but also help students get absorbed in various posts of ICICI Bank and private
insurance companies. The response of students is quite encouraging and the
university has decided to go for more such collaboration with other banks and
financial institutions, Choudhury said.
The university has plans to tie up with Bhaba Atomic Research Centre (Barc)
to introduce courses on radiotherapy and medical physics. Medical physics is a
branch of applied physics and related to the application of physics to
medicine. The vice-chancellor said both the courses are in demand in the field
of medical science and have good job prospects.
Institutes like the Bhubaneswar Borooah Cancer Institute has informed the
university the need for people trained in the field of radiotherapy and medical
physics.
The response from Barc is positive. As soon as the formalities are cleared,
the university will introduce the course.
Running conventional courses is burning a hole in the cash-starved
universitys pocket. Self-financing courses are the only way out.
Knowledge sharing is another option for the university to attain its position
as an institution of higher learning. Gauhati University has decided to
revitalise its leadership by promoting the growth, transfer and application of
knowledge through continuous self-development, collaboration and sharing of
knowledge with other institutions of excellence. It is expected that such
initiatives would help the university emerge as one of the most sought after
institutions of higher learning, Choudhury said.
The Numaligarh Refinery Ltd, Oil India Ltd, Omeo Kumar Das Institute of
Social Science and Development and Don Bosco Institute have expressed their
interest to collaborate with Gauhati University to share knowledge and create a
pool of skilled manpower.
The Postgraduate Students Union and All Guwahati Students Union have
welcomed Gauhati Universitys decision to collaborate with the corporate
houses.
Dipankar Das, general secretary of AGSU, said Gauhati University has to bring
innovation to keep pace with time.
It is high time for Gauhati University to stop producing mere graduates and
postgraduates majority of whom are seen unemployed and sitting after the
varsity life. The institution must equip students to secure better jobs, Das
said.
