A ten-day-old baby is no more under the loving care of his mother because
his parents got married against the wishes of the Kathalri village Panchyat
near Karnal in Haryana.

The village Panchyat had observed that marriage of Pawan and Kavita was not
acceptable as they both belonged to the same Gohtra of Valmikis.

The couple got married last year and went to Mumbai.

And recently when they returned, the Panchyat was still very harsh with them
and ordered their separation. The Panchayat gave the baby to another family
in the village.

On top of it he was asked to pay a fine of Rs 65000.

''I am not happy with the verdict. I don't know what I should do,'' said
Pawan.

Panchayat members were firm with their decision and believe that was the
only way of justice.

''They are of same Gohtra which means they are brother and sister. We can't
let this happen and Panchyat is right,'' said Ranbir Singh, Panchyat member.

But what is more shocking even the state co-operative minister endorses the
Panchayat's way of justice.

She feels Gohtra's should be respected.

''Gohtra comes first, law is after that. The couple was wrong in marrying
within the same Gohtra,'' said Meena Mandal, Minister of state for
Co-operatives, Haryana.

For the moment there is no support for the couple but the Panchayat's
decision would surely anger many human rights activities.
