Dear Ms. Kakati,
Thank you for your call. I am trying my best the people at other end atre not
keeping their words. Hence the delay.
I am giving below a letter that I have sent to the Sentinel, the news paper I
subscribe. I do not know whether they will publish it or not. Any way we can
always try.
With best wishes.
Ahmed.

'Asom Wins Best State Award'
Dear Sir,

The Sentinel (15 September 2007) reported that 'Asom Wins Best State Award'
given by the India Today Group of Publications for 'all round development
during the year 2006-2007'. We are glad that some one at National level noticed
some activity in our corner of the world. But is the award justified? Recent
flood fury has unearthed number of corruption cases related to flood control
measures.Similarly there are number of schemes launched without preparing any
infrastructure. A case in point is the scheme where a woman delivering a baby
in a Government hospital is given an allowance. This has brought in hordes of
expectant mothers to the hospitals but there is not enough room to accommodate
all of them. The hospitals are hard put to accommodate them. If we take cases
of civic hygiene and safe drinking water system they are almost non existent.
On top of that the Government has got the 'Fly Over Bug' at Guwahati. It is
hell bent on making fly over come what may. In the process the traveling public
is facing untold misery for lack of alternative routes. Work is in progress on
the main NH 37 for widening at Guwahati-Jorabat sector which handles all the
traffic going out of the city to other parts. But the authorities did not think
of opening up an alternative route which is available through Chndrapur. There
is some minor work to be done on this route to make it suitable for traffic
but for reasons not known the work is pending and the road is not available for
long distance traffic. If this road was available a sizeable traffic load could
have been diverted through this road easing the snarls. The traffic snarls are
so bad that two Justices have filed a PIL against the Govetrnment of Assam.
All cities in the state suffer from perennial water logging in the rainy season
and there is hardly any action to alleviate this problem.Funds are being spent
but the results are all there to see.Where are the funds going? The authorities
here in Guwahati has surrendered to the elements in the recent flooding in the
City.
Less said about the atrocities carried out in the name of security is better.
Recent killing of an old lady in Nalbari is a stark example of unthinking way
of our Law Men.
We do not know what criteria were used by India Today to judge the achievements
but they may have based their assessment on Government provided figures. Had
they conducted a physical survey in the state possibly the picture would have
been different.
With best regards.
Yours faithfully.
