MANILA — Two elderly women in the Philippines born to Japanese fathers before
World War ll have been granted Japanese nationality by the Tokyo Family Court.
The Philippines Nikkei-jin Legal Support Center, a Tokyo-based nonprofit group,
identified the women as Juanita Sakamoto, 80 and Melecia Yoshikawa, 89.

According to the center, Sakamoto's father, Takeichi Sakamoto from Hiroshima
Prefecture and Yoshikawa's father, Masutaro Yoshikawa, of Nagasaki Prefecture,
migrated to the Philippines before the World War II. Records said the Japanese
migrants married Filipino women and fathered children. Some 3,000 children of
Japanese origin were left in the Philippines after the war, where they faced
discrimination and poverty with many never knowing the names of their fathers.
