>From our Correspondent
JORHAT, Oct 13: The stage is set for the ninth edition of Jorhat Book Fair
which promises to whet the appetite for reading and basking in the world of
literature like never before. Office-bearers of Assam Academic Centre (AAC),
which has been organizing the biennial book carnival since 1990, told reporters
here last night that book sellers and publishers from Delhi, Kolkata, Dehradun
and Ludhiana, apart from those based in the State, have confirmed their
participation in the 12-day event, slated from October 26 to November 6.
Publication houses of international standing like Prentice Hall, Oxford
University Press and Cambridge will also peddle their books at the fair opening
on Jorhat District Sports Association grounds.
The highlight of the ninth Jorhat Book Fair will be a State-level seminar to be
attended by the vice chancellors of all universities in the State and leading
education barons. Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi, Education Minister Ripun Bora and
other top officials of the State Education Department will also be present on
the occasion.
The purpose for holding the education seminar is to pave the way for a roadmap
to building up the skills and qualifications of the students of Asom so that
the prospects for their absorption in industry and other job sectors brighten
up, general secretary of the organizing committee of ninth Jorhat Book Fair
Biman Sharma said. The meet will explore the need for effecting necessary
changes in various fields of the higher education sector, he added. Several
leading business institutions of the country will also actively participate in
the seminar.
The AAC office-bearers claimed that a massive publicity drive is on to attract
students, teachers and guardians towards the forthcoming book fair. The stress
is on garnering the maximum attention in the interior areas, they pointed out.
Arrangements for beautification drives, water supply, resting places and other
amenities will be made on a priority basis, they added.
Special sessions of antaranga alap (close interaction), book release functions
and cultural shows will be the regular programmes of the book carnival. On
October 28, an on-the-spot drawing competition will be held for schoolchildren.
The theme for the book fair souvenir, entitled Prajnya, this time around is
translated literature, the AAC office-bearers said. Paban Buragohain is the
chief editor of the souvenir which is being edited by Dr Mukul Hazarika.
Noted litterateur Nirupama Borgohain will inaugurate the ninth Jorhat Book Fair.
