Rs 400-crore hopes ride on twin projects
A STAFF REPORTER Assam chief minister Tarun Gogoi lays the
foundation stone of the automobile factory in Chaygaon on Friday. Picture by
Eastern Projections Chatabari (Kamrup), Nov. 2: Chief minister Tarun Gogoi
today laid the foundation stones for two industrial projects, opening the
floodgates for investments of nearly Rs 3,000 crore in the coming months.
The Rs 100-crore automobile-manufacturing project was unveiled today as was
the Industrial Growth Centre (IGC) here.
The automobile plant will produce 2.5 lakh motorcycles per year costing Rs
25,000 each — under the brand name Rhino — with Chinese collaboration. The
Assam government will have a 10 per cent stake in the company.
Assam industries minister Pradyut Bordoloi said several investment proposals
would be turning into a reality in the near future. He said outside investors
should not be treated with distrust and should be welcomed by local residents
with unstinting support.
“Investments worth Rs 3,000 crore are in the pipeline which would become a
reality in the next six to seven months,” Bordoloi said.
“Government jobs would not help root out unemployment and the only answer is
industrialisation,” he added.
Bordoloi said companies such as Dunlop Tyres have already taken up plots at
the Industrial Growth Centre. In the next two to three months’ time, all the
units will start functioning.
The 880-bigha centre has been promoted by Assam Industrial Infrastructure
Development Corporation and is estimated to attract investments of a minimum of
Rs 300 crore.
The growth centre has all the requisite facilities like a dedicated power
line and good approach roads.
The automobile-manufacturing project in the Northeast has been promoted by
SAII Motors, Calcutta. Apart from motorcycles, it will produce power tillers
and tractors in 10 months’ time, also in collaboration with Chinese companies.
Present on the dais were health minister Himanta Biswa Sarma, transport
minister Chandan Brahma, Assam PCC chief Bhubaneswar Kalita, Assam Youth
Congress president Rekibuddin Ahmed and Manoj Chhawchharia, managing director,
SAII Motors.
Gogoi said this was just the beginning and a congenial atmosphere was being
created to attract investments. “We do not want our state to remain backward
and we want to see a smile on every face.”
He said people who have invested here are doing quite well.
Sarma echoed Bordoloi in saying that industrialisation was the only answer to
growing unemployment as the number of jobless has risen to 18 lakh.
Chandan Brahma said the government is doing its best to speed up
industrialisation.
Bhubaneswar Kalita thanked the government for the automobile plant and the
Industrial Growth Centre.
State Youth Congress president Rekibuddin Ahmed said the growth centre would
help the people of Chatabari, as it would now develop into a bustling mini
township.
He said he was “elated” because the growth centre would “throw up thousands
of job opportunities for the youth”.
AGP legislator from Chaygaon, Kamala Kalita, in whose constituency Chatabari
falls, appreciated the government’s efforts and hoped that local residents
would benefit greatly.
