GUWAHATI, Nov 12 – On the issue of verification of nationality of the
people expelled from Arunachal Pradesh and Nagaland, published by the State
government in the newspapers on November 11, the All Assam Students' Union
(AASU) spewed venom against the government calling it a public display of
pro-Bangladeshi sentiments. The AASU president Sankar Prasad Roy and advisor
Dr Samujjal Bhattacharyya while talking to newspersons here, alleged that by
providing citizenship to those people, who were expelled from the
neighbouring States between July 2007 and September 2007, the State
government has made a mockery of the law and the special tribunal made for
the purpose.

"The Gogoi government always pleaded for the tribunals' decision whenever
AASU raised the issue for the identification of illegal Bangladeshis. It is
only the affection for the illegal migrants that has made the government
provide over the night citizenship to them through newspaper
advertisements," said the AASU president. "Now the government itself has
proved that there is no use of tribunal in the State," he added.

The AASU has always opposed the identification of illegal migrants through
tribunal, which is nowhere else in the country.

"Apart from patronising the illegal migrants, the government is also
inviting the fundamentalist forces, who have started operating from the
State," said the AASU advisor, Samujjal Kr Bhattacharyya. "Without hurting
any religious sentiments, we are opposing the move Al Qaeda, Jehadi groups
and fundamentalists forces, who have entered the State and the recent
warning of Osama bin Laden to convert Assam into an Islamic State is a clear
indication towards it," he said.

"Now, we demand the State government to dissolve the tribunals since its
uselessness has been proved by the government itself," he added. The
students' body also demanded the government to make public those documents
on the basis of which, the expelled people have been identified as Indian
citizens. "It was never seen in the history of independent India that
citizenship is provided through the Superintendent of the Police as
advertised in the newspapers. More concerning is the fact that even
Opposition did not raised this issue on the floor of the Assembly,"
Bhattacharyya stressed.

The Union demanded of the government to adopt a proper resolution to evict
all the Bangladeshis and fundamentalist groups from the soil of Assam, in
this Assembly session.

"Since the illegal migrants are now vying for greener pastures in the hill
areas of the State, the AASU jointly with the Karbi Students' Association
and All Dimasa Students' Union will start a movement in Diphu, Guwahati and
Haflong," he said. On November 15, a joint torch rally of the students'
bodies has been organised in Guwahati.
