Travelling in trains passing through Bihar and Uttar Pradesh is full of risk
for passengers. The safety of passengers are threatened by frequent train
dacoities and other crimes.
Fifty-one per cent of robberies on wheels take place in Bihar and UP alone,
this shocking disclosures was made by a recent report of the National Crime
Records Bureau.
"The Patna rail police jurisdiction accounts for 23 per cent of all the crimes
on wheels committed throughout the country," report said.
The Patna rail police region falls between Mughalsarai in UP and Mokama route
in Bihar.
According to the report, Bihar and Uttar Prasdesh top the list of train
dacoities in the country followed by Jharkhand, Madhya Pradesh, Maharashtra,
Gujarat and West Bengal.
In Bihar, most of the crimes take place in the Patna-Gaya route,
Mughalsarai-Jhajha, Gaya-Mughalsarai, Barauni-Samastipur, Hajipur-Gorakhpur
sections of the East Central Railway.
About 2,700 crime cases were reported from all over the country in the first
three months of 2006, an increase of over 200 per cent.
Official figures show that at least two murders or attempt to murder cases take
place in trains or railway premises in the country daily.
Banned Maoist outfits are also engaged in crimes on wheels. Even the
involvement of Government Railway Police in the crimes is reported regularly.
Railway Minister Lalu Prasad Yadav time and again has blamed the Bihar
government led by Nitish Kumar for crimes in trains.
